How Much Does a Private Tutor Cost in Ghana?

What families in Ghana pay for home and online tutoring, what pushes the price up or down, and why LessonPro charges parents nothing.

There is no fixed price for a private tutor in Ghana. Every home tutor sets their own rate. In the ads below, two home tutors for maths and science in Accra asked GHS 120 and GHS 400, both "per service". What we can show you is what tutors are asking in public right now, what moves the price, and how to agree a fee you will not regret.

LessonPro itself costs parents nothing. No sign-up fee, no booking fee, no agency fee.

What tutors are asking right now

LessonPro is new, so we do not yet have enough of our own tutors to publish a fair average. Until we do, here is a dated snapshot of public listings.

On 3 November 2026 we looked at the tutoring ads on Jiji Ghana (jiji.com.gh). Of 20 ads, 13 gave no price at all ("contact for price"). The 7 that did asked:

  • GHS 100 an hour, for English, French and German lessons in Adenta.
  • Between GHS 120 and GHS 500 "per service" for maths, science and geography, in Lapaz, Dansoman, Kumasi, Sunyani and central Accra. The ads do not say if that means one lesson, a week or a month.
  • GHS 800 a day, for a maths teacher in East Legon.

On LessonPro, every profile shows the tutor's rate per hour, so you can compare like with like. In the app, the Rate filter groups tutors into four bands. On the website, type your budget into Min GHS/hr and Max GHS/hr on Find a Tutor.

What affects the price

The subject. A tutor may charge more for a subject fewer people can teach, such as Elective Mathematics or Physics at SHS level.

The level and the exam. BECE and WASSCE preparation means past questions, marking schemes and a fixed date. Some tutors charge more for exam work. Choosing a BECE or WASSCE tutor.

Experience and proof. A trained teacher with an NTC licence or a B.Ed may ask more than a university student. On LessonPro, a gold Credential verified badge means we checked at least one of their certificates.

Travel. A home teacher who comes to your house in Spintex or Tema spends time and transport money to reach you. Lessons at the tutor's place, or online, may cost less.

How many children. Ask whether the tutor has a price for two siblings in one lesson.

Online or in person. Online lessons save the tutor's travel. Remember your own data costs for an hour of video.

Hourly, per lesson or per month

Tutors quote prices in different ways, so check which one you are looking at:

  • Per hour. What LessonPro profiles show. Good for comparing tutors.
  • Per lesson. A lesson may be 1 hour, 1.5 hours or 2. Always ask how long a lesson is.
  • Per month. A package, such as 2 lessons a week for 4 weeks. Agree how many lessons the month includes and what happens to a missed one.

A worked example, with a made-up rate: a tutor who charges GHS 80 an hour and teaches 2 one-hour lessons a week costs GHS 160 a week, or GHS 640 for 8 lessons in a month. Do the same sum for each tutor you shortlist.

Paying the tutor directly (no agency fee)

You pay the tutor, not LessonPro. LessonPro never holds your money and takes nothing from what you pay. That is why every profile says No agency fees.

  1. Agree the rate, the lesson length and the number of lessons before the first lesson. Put it in a WhatsApp message so you both have it in writing.
  2. Ask how the tutor wants to be paid: MoMo, cash or bank transfer.
  3. Tutors who use LessonPro can send you an invoice link that shows each lesson, the total and the MoMo number to pay.
  4. After you pay, ask for a receipt. A LessonPro receipt cannot be edited later, so it is good proof of payment.
